The fox woke before dawn and immediately knew something was wrong.
Usually the forest arrived in layers.
The distant creek. The rustle of mice beneath leaves. An owl settling onto a branch half a field away. The soft turning of the wind.
Today all those sounds seemed to arrive at once.
The creek roared.
The leaves crackled like breaking twigs.
The owl's feathers sounded as loud as wings.
The fox pressed his ears flat against his head.
"Too much," he whispered.
As the sun rose, things became worse. Every smell struck him like a thrown pebble. Damp earth. Pine sap. Rabbit tracks from the night before. Even the scent of his own den seemed sharp enough to sting.
He retreated underground and buried his nose beneath his tail.
Hours passed.
The forest continued without him.
A squirrel visited the entrance.
"Coming out?"
"No."
"Chasing mice?"
"No."
"Is it bears?"
"Worse."
The squirrel considered this.
"Oh."
A little later, an old badger stopped by.
"Broken leg?"
"No."
"Hungry?"
"No."
"Lonely?"
The fox thought for a moment.
"A bit."
The badger nodded and sat near the entrance without speaking.
After a while, a rabbit joined them. Then the squirrel returned. Nobody talked much. They simply sat nearby as the morning drifted into afternoon.
The fox appreciated that.
By evening the pain had begun to ease.
The smells became smells again instead of explosions.
The sounds separated into their proper places.
The world quietly untangled itself.
He emerged from the den as sunset painted the clouds orange.
The squirrel leapt up. "You're alive!"
"Barely."
The rabbit laughed.
The badger handed him a blackberry.
The fox ate it slowly.
It tasted wonderful.
For the first time all day, he noticed the chorus of insects beginning their evening songs. Not too loud. Not too sharp. Just enough.
The fox closed his eyes and listened.
"Did you defeat the monster?" asked the squirrel.
The fox looked around at his friends.
The cool air.
The gentle sounds.
The fading ache.
Then he smiled.
"No," he said. "I think it just passed by. But you all helped me wait for it."
And that night, beneath a sky full of stars, the forest sounded exactly the way it was supposed to.
Which was very quiet indeed.
For a fox. 🦊
